What Subtitles Are Available With Netflix?

Netflix offers subtitles in a large number of languages, and the app isn’t able to list every language. To simplify things, Netflix automatically allows you to choose from between five and seven languages that are most likely to be relevant based on your Netflix language settings.

If you download a Netflix movie or show, the language options are reduced to the two most relevant.

If you don’t see your preferred language as a subtitle option in Netflix, then the app may be in the wrong language for you. If you suspect that might be the case, you can change the language in Netflix.

How to Turn On Subtitles When Watching Netflix

The basic process of turning on subtitles in Netflix is the same regardless of the platform you use, but the specific instructions vary. You typically need to click, tap, or select a dialog icon or an audio and subtitles text link, after which you can choose the subtitle language option that you want.

For specific instructions pertaining to popular Netflix devices, check out the instructions below.

What Else Can Netflix Subtitles Do?

Before you turn those subtitles off, take a moment to consider one extra way that Netflix subtitles can help. While they are primarily meant to help viewers who have difficulty hearing dialog, and viewers who have to watch with the stream muted, you can use Netflix subtitles to help learn a new language.

Language Learning with Netflix is a Chrome extension that you can use in any Chromium-compatible browser. It provides the option to display two sets of Netflix subtitles at once, allowing you to see both your language and another language on screen at the same time.

While this extension won’t actually teach you a language from the ground up, it can let you compare foreign language subtitles with your language to strengthen your understanding of the foreign language or just pick up some extra vocabulary.
